Fall / Winter 2006

There are several themes for the coming knitting season that appeared at the trade show in June!

Firs and most obvious is accessories!  Scarves are not dead, just longer or wider. Europe has just embraced them. Adding “stuff” to felted purses, sweaters, scarves, and hats is great for following a trend while maintaining an individual style. We were impressed with a new exhibitor who supplied us with already made pompoms, pin-on flowers, and bead tassels.  Buttons - particularly unmated but coordinating - are used to decorate everything.

Another trend is a return to classic styles and soft smooth yarns both solid colors and tweeded.  There are cables, textures, and lace all knit in fiber blends of alpaca, merino, cashmere, silk, and bamboo (more then ever!).  All of which provide great stitch definition.

There is still, of course, experimentation with shapes (like circles) to start a garment, hexagons to make a whole sweater, or quilt techniques like the log cabin to mix colors.

New yarn companies continue to pop up and lots of books with great instruction and ideas are appearing on our shelves.

Knit in public!

Share your needle knowledge!

Spread the joy of knitting and crocheting!!!

Fall / Winter 2005

New Yarn Lines:

Steadfast Fiber
: a hand dye company doing solid colors in both heavy worsted called Wonderful Wool and mohair named Marvelous Mohair. The colors are striated and the two types of yarns match in color and gauge so they can be used in the same project.

Ellyn Cooper's Yarn Sonnets: it was a difficult project to choose which yarns and which colors of these yarns to bring in. I decided to try her sock yarn called Fine Merino (4oz skein - 345 yds), Domestic Smooth (3.5oz skein, 200yd, worsted wool 4 ply) and Metallo (150yd of silk, mohair and metallic). All of these are hand dyed, multicolored with names like Exotic Mango, Blue Horse, Ivory Rose and Staghorn.

These added to Lorna's Laces and Wool in the Woods make the selection of hand dyes great. We now have Wink, Frost and Miss Mohair from Wool in the Woods.

New from:
Karabella: Aurora and one color of wonderfully soft Superyak.
Tahki/Stacy Charles: Multicolor, Zara, Bon Bon, Bambini, Wave, Allegro
Berroco: Multicolor Suede, Luxury Suede, Runway and new colors in old yarns

For raising your spirits there's: Smile, Joke, Musique, Lolita, Nubbles, Mira Mira and Hot!Hot!Hot!.

Vivian Hoxbro kits are worked in a unique knitting technique with unusual color combinations of Harrisville yarn. I'm making a jacket and really enjoying it even with the small needles.

The new patterns are varied and show the wide age and taste range of today's knitters. Books are proliferating like rabbits and we now have specific technique books and specific garment type books, mystery books and novels with patterns.

Spring / Summer 2005

The move is complete and Bonnie Knits has all of the spring/summer yarns in place, but suddenly fall is upon us. The yarn company reps and the trade show in Columbus pushed us into wool before the blast of summer heat was here. Last year at the trade show I was overwhelmed by the number and variety of new books and this year it was new yarn companies that were making my brain work overtime.

Several companies have added yarn lines. Euro has a Louisa Harding line of yarns and pattern books which is much different and dressier than she created for Rowan or for her Miss Bea series. Westminster Fibers who brings us Rowan, has expanded the new RYC line introduced in the spring, added Harris yarns and Nashua Handknits under the leadership of Linda Pratt. The patterns and some of the yarns are American inspired. We have ordered some new to us hand dyed yarns from Lorna’s Laces, Ellen Cooper’s Yarn Sonnets and Steadfast Fibers. Also we have admired and have info on Artyarns, Jade Sapphire and Rio de La Plata to fill in when there’s room.

Even though the rumor is that ponchos are out, there are some cute new designs for them. For accessories the newer things are interesting shapes for shawls, caplets in many materials and styles and purses. Patterns for purses and bags are great for the fall – newer knitters can make stylish items easily. Berroco’s Suede and Runway are great if you don’t want to do one of the many wonderful felted projects. Tahki/Stacy Charles excited us the most, although Berroco also had nifty stuff.

Now the pressure is on to finish my warm weather knitting (some of which isn't even started) so I can have fun with winter as soon as the yarn and patterns come through the front door.

New “stuff” added to Bonnie Knits already bulging shelves;

Vivian Hoxbro kits for jackets and shawls

Twilleys cottons and pattern books

Eucolan travel and gift packs

Queenshland Kathmandu aran tweed

Karabella selected yarns

Lantern Moon some bags

Scheepjes summer cottons.
